Arthur Read is a fictional character in the Canadian/American animated educational children's show Arthur, based on children's books by Marc Brown. Arthur is an 8-year-old anthropomorphic aardvark who lives in the fictional community of Elwood City; the series revolves around his life and daily interactions with his friends and family. The show was developed for PBS by its affiliate WGBH, and since its debut in 1996, it has become one of the longest-running children's television series.
Arthur's balloon in the Macy's Parade debuted in 1997 along with balloons of Tommy Pickles and Chuckie Finster from Rugrats, Bumpé the Cow, and original Macy's creation Petula Pig; Arthur was the first balloon in the parade route that year. He retired after 2001, but briefly returned in 2003.
- In 1997, Arthur ended up getting his arm damaged by a Central Park tree due to strong winds, but still appeared in the parade though.
- In 1998, Arthur was lowered to the ground, causing the balloon to battle in the high winds with his book being deflated.
