Chase is one of the canine protagonists of the Canadian CGI animated series PAW Patrol, which premiered in the United States on Nickelodeon on August 12, 2013. Chase is a 7-year-old German shepherd rescue dog who is the highest-ranked pup on the PAW Patrol team, being second in command only to Ryder, their human leader; and serves as a police dog and spy. He goes on missions to protect the shoreside community of Adventure Bay, working alongside his colleagues Marshall, Skye, Rubble, Rocky, and Zuma, who, like him, rely on their own sets of skills based on real-life professions. Chase is a heroic and natural athletic leader who enjoys taking charge and is the most mature of the pack. His great sense of smell is often thwarted by his allergy to cats and feathers.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

Chase was first on the case as a giant balloon in the 2017 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, journeying from Adventure Bay to Manhattan. The balloon features Chase in his signature navy blue police uniform (including a hat large enough to cover a real police cruiser), complete with his trusty searchlight and net launcher. Proving “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” the Chase balloon measures 43.3 feet tall, 36.2 feet wide, and 59.8 feet long, and sports paws larger than two full-grown Great Danes.[1]

In conjunction with the balloon’s debut, Nickelodeon and Spin Master sponsored a sweepstakes that offered a chance to win a trip to see the Parade—and the balloon’s first flight—live in New York City. Contestants could enter the contest by sharing their special PAW Patrol moments on Instagram and using the hashtag #PAWSweepstakes.[2]

The Chase balloon returned in 2018, holding the honor of leading the Parade lineup. The following year, forecasted winds threatened to ground the giant balloons. Chase, the second-largest balloon as measured by helium volume, was to be one of the first balloons sidelined if winds exceeded regulations.[3] However, they remained below the threshold, and all balloons (including Chase) flew at a lower altitude.

In 2020, the balloon was planned to be flown with a five-vehicle framework that would reduce the number of handlers—a measure put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As cases of the virus increased leading up to the Parade, however, it was decided that any returning balloon would be shown virtually on the reimagined broadcast; the Chase balloon used footage from its previous three flights, touting the summer 2021 release of PAW Patrol: The Movie.

The Chase balloon returned live to the 2021 Parade lineup, promoting the streaming of PAW Patrol: The Movie on Paramount+. In 2022, the balloon celebrated the upcoming 10th anniversary of PAW Patrol and the fall 2023 release of PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie. Chase continues to make annual appearances in the lineup as of 2023, patrolling the Parade route from above as he comes to the ruff-ruff rescue.
