Clifford the Big Red Dog is the main character of his eponymous children's book series, introduced in 1963 by writer Norman Bridwell. He went on to establish Scholastic as a premier publishing company and become its official mascot. He also became well-known for starring in an animated TV series on PBS, where he was voiced by John Ritter. Clifford is a timid and clumsy, yet friendly and well-meaning, giant Labrador retriever with red fur who lives on an island with his owner, an 8-year-old girl named Emily Elizabeth, and a number of human and canine friends.

History with the Macy's Parade

Clifford is one of the longest-running balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He first appeared as a balloon in 1990, where he led the parade, and was retired in 1996. Then he returned to the parade for a second run, from 2000 to 2004, to promote his TV show which was airing on PBS during that same timespan.

  • In 2004, Clifford was pushed into a tree and was caught in it, but no damage was done to him.
