Donald Duck is a classic cartoon character who first appeared in Walt Disney’s The Red Little Hen in 1934. Since then, he has become as famous as his Disney contemporaries, such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto, appearing in over 150 shorts and 16 feature films. His stardom is especially apparent in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, where he debuted as a balloon only one year after his on-screen debut. The long-necked duck struggled in the damp Thanksgiving conditions and—true to his character—eventually bowed out only one block into his inaugural march. Two floats featuring Donald appeared in 1939 and 1946, but the best was yet to come for the foul-tempered fowl. In 1962, Donald made Macy’s Parade history when he became the first-ever character to receive a second balloon variation. The new Donald Duck balloon was twice the size of the original and was created by the team of Goodyear artists who breathed life (and helium) into the likes of Popeye and Bullwinkle J. Moose. It made 11 appearances in total before retiring, only to return more than a decade later for his 50th anniversary in 1984. Read On... |
