Raggedy Ann is a character created by American writer Johnny Gruelle (1880–1938) in a series of books he wrote and illustrated for young children. Depicted as a rag doll with red yarn for hair and a triangle nose, she was first designed in 1915 and was introduced to the public in 1918; two years later, she also gained a brother, Raggedy Andy.
Raggedy Ann first appeared in the Macy's Parade in 1984 and appeared until 1986. She reappeared in the 1991 parade and retired the same year. She led the balloon lineup in the 1985 parade.
