Shrek is a fictional ogre character created by American author William Steig. Shrek is the protagonist of the book of the same name and of eponymous films by DreamWorks Animation. The name "Shrek" is derived from the German word Schreck, meaning "fright" or "terror". Shrek is voiced by Mike Myers, although it was planned for him to be voiced by Chris Farley before his death in December 1997, and played by Brian d'Arcy James in Shrek the Musical. Since his first movie's release in 2001, he has expanded into three subsequent movies, TV specials, video games, theme park attractions, and has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Shrek first appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2007 as a balloon to promote Shrek The Third and Shrek the Halls. In 2009, the Broadway show Shrek The Musical made a performance. The Shrek balloon appeared until 2010.
Though he hasn't been seen in the main parade after 2010, in 2017, the Shrek franchise would later be represented in Universal's Holiday Parade Featuring Macy's, featuring Shrek himself in walk-around form along with many other characters from his movies, as well as balloons of Gingy the Gingerbread Man and two Dronkeys.
